How to clean a kitchen floor

Kitchen floors can be made from ceramic tile, vinyl, wood or laminate. This means that your kitchen must be made from one of the above-mentioned materials. Each of these materials has its own unique method of cleaning and cleaners. However, for kitchen spills which are common, like sticky messes, grease or food, the first thing is to use a damp paper towel to attack the spot. If this isn’t enough to remove the spillage, cleaners for your specific type of floor can be used plus some of the elbow greases. The following are the ways to go about cleaning kitchen floors made from different materials:

Cleaning a Vinyl Floor

It’s arguably the most common surface for kitchen floors. Vinyl floors are very easy to clean and maintain. For these floors, it’s vital to get rid of stains as soon as they occur. If the stain is allowed to set or dry, it may not be possible to remove them.

What you’ll need:

Warm water, broom, bucket, mild dish detergent like Ivory, soft cloth or brush with rubber bristles, mop clean towels and vinyl floor cleaner.

The cleaning process:

Take the following steps in cleaning your vinyl kitchen floor:

  • The first thing to do is to sweep your floor making sure that you flush dirt from under appliances and corners.
  • Use warm water and a mop to clean the floor without using any detergents.
  • In case some dirt remains, you can use the Ivory dish soap with the warm water without over applying it. Ensure only light bubbles appear in the water.
  • Gently scrub the floor using a soft cloth or the mop. In case of stubborn spots, you may need to use a rubber bristled brush.
  • Clean up excess water with clean towels and allow the floor to dry.
  • If some dirt remains, try the floor cleaner. However, you have to first do a spot test then apply the cleaner, use the brush to scrub and then wipe it clean.
  • Before resuming the use of the floor, make sure it’s properly dry.

Cleaning ceramic tile kitchen floor

What you’ll need:

You need to have a broom, mop or sponge, warm water, mild dish detergents like Ivory and a bucket.

The cleaning process:

Follow these steps to clean your ceramic tile kitchen floor:

  • First, thoroughly clean the floor with the broom, making sure that you haven’t forgotten the edges of the appliances and corners.
  • Then, fill your bucket with some water.
  • If you notice greasy or sticky spots on the floor, add the dish detergent. Otherwise, just use the warm water.
  • Sponge or mop the floor and rinse frequently.
  • Before you begin to use the floor, allow it to properly dry up.

Cleaning a wood laminate kitchen floor

What you’ll need:

You’ll need a broom, a bucket, a soft cloth, water and white vinegar.

The cleaning process:

Take the following steps to clean your wood laminate floor:

  • The first thing to do is to sweep the floor thoroughly with the broom.
  • Then, mix one cup of vinegar for each gallon of water in your bucket.
  • Next, dip the mop or soft cloth into the bucket and allow it some time to saturate with the solution.
  • Remove as much moisture as possible from the cloth by wringing it out into the bucket.
  • After this, begin to wipe the damp cloth on your wood laminate floor while frequently turning it.
  • As may be needed, repeat steps 3 to 5.
  • Lastly, allow the floor to air-dry sufficiently before beginning to use it again.

Cleaning hardwood floor

What you’ll need:

You need a broom, a hardwood floor cleaner and a microfiber mop.

The cleaning process:

Use the following procedure to clean the kitchen hardwood floor:

  • Thoroughly sweep the floor with the broom.
  • Use the instructions found on the bottle of the hardwood cleaner to mix to the appropriate strength. Then, apply to the microfiber cloth directly. Never directly pour a liquid directly onto the hardwood floor.
  • Scrub all the areas of the room using the microfiber mop.
